In processing the reddish, rust-coloured core of over 120-year old beech trunks, our company is doing its part in the initiative of the State of Baden-Württemberg and the BUND-Germany, who have set for themselves the objective of promoting this wonderful material for ecological reasons.

The general obsession with reproducible mass products as part of today’s high-gloss look has unfortunately imposed a standard on traditional wood which does not do justice to its distinctive nature and characteristics. Solid wood is now supposed to show the “flawless” regularity of selected top-quality veneer and to posses the same stability as the homogenous material structure of fibreboard. For the manufacture of furniture, as well as for the woodworking trade in general, this has meant an enormous use of resources with the result that a large part of our indigenous trees are not suitable or only suitable on a limited basis for use in furniture building. This effect has less to do with functional reasons as with highly questionable aesthetic preferences.

Naturally grown solid wood is distinguished, as are all living things, by its individuality. Grain, colouring, ingrowths, knots and cracks are all witnesses to the tangible biography of a tree and thus differ from trunk to trunk. Every good cabinetmaker knows where to draw the line to constructional shortcomings and to reject material rendered unusable on these grounds for whatever function required.

In a spezial range of models, we have attempted to unite a classic form with a natural, rustic material. From its very nature, core wood is strongly interspersed with knots and has a tendency to crack heavily. Although we do deal with these characteristics by cutting the core planks appropriately and by artificially drying the wood to the average room temperature of today’s centrally heated rooms, these rustic effects, together with the dark colouring and the brushed and oiled surface, are intended They give this table its distinctive appearance.

As with all solid wood, this table will adjust to its local climate and will change in relation to temperature and humidity. Changing cracks, uneven surfaces and noticeable joints on glued edges are perfectly normal and will not impair the functionality of this piece of furniture in any way. To the contrary, they reflect the originality of this most useful of materials in the history of civilisation.

Oiled surfaces “breathe”. They are not sealed with varnish which means they are more sensitive to all kinds of liquids. Through normal use and through oiling with Draenert Wood Oil (every 6 months), they will attain a natural patina which will make the surface relatively resistant.

General care instructions
  • Beware of placing solid wood tables on underfloor heating or in continuous intensive sunlight (conservatory). For these reasons, these sites cause extreme stress to solid wood furniture. Warping and significant colour changes could also occur.
  • Our tables are treated with natural hard oils. Depending on use and cleaning habits, this unsealed surface should be regularly renewed. You will find an appropriate wood oil among our range of products. Please contact your furniture store.
Spots which have infiltrated into the wood fibre can be treated as follows:
  • Polish in grain direction (in steps of grain sizes of 100-600) until the mark has disappeared. Afterwards, match the connecting surfaces over a large area. At first oil, once or twice, only the immediate vicinity of the mark, afterwards the whole surface.
  • For brushed surfaces: Brush the damaged area with a hard root or brass brush in direction of the fibre until the mark has disappeared. Afterwards, match the connecting surfaces over a large area. Under no circumstance is it allowed to polish, as another surface look will appear. Afterwards carry on as described above.
