Copacabana

The close-up view of each stone type shows a relatively true image of the crystalline structure and the colouring. This is suitable for grained slabs to a limited extend only. In regard to the colour matching, please take an original sample of the stone from your furniture store as a basis.

Petrography

A lively decored rock with prevailing dark sections in the mostly large-sized slabs.
The finely crystalline dark areas mainly consist of transparent quartz with bright feldspar and regularly interspersed black biotite. Although the quartz clearly prevails, the far minor mica content determines the almost black appearance due to the transparency of the quartz crystallites. A strong contrast is formed by the pegmatite layers and schlieren which are composed of grayish-white feldspar and transparent, light gray quartz. In some slabs, they even represent the main part.

Petrogenesis

The rock originates in sandy-clayey sediments on the bed of a primal ocean more than  500 millions of years ago. The almost black quarzite gneiss was generated by high pressures and temperatures during an early orogenesis. In the course of that process, penetrating smelts (the bright, macrocrystalline pegmatites) were folded together with the gneiss.
