The close-up view of each stone type shows a relatively true image of the crystalline structure and the colouring. This is suitable for grained slabs to a limited extend only. In regard to the colour matching, please take an original sample of the stone from your furniture store as a basis.
Petrography
The rock is composed of the minerals calcite and aragonite. These minerals show
the same chemical composition (calcium carbonate), but different crystal lattice.
Petrogenesis
The denomination „onyx“ or „onyx marble“ - in the natural stone industry mostly used - has become common currency, nonetheless it is wrong. In point of fact, it is a crystalline limestone that was generated by a sediment of calcareous thermal springs. These often hot springs, that depend on volcanic activities, often contain diverse iron oxides and other metal compounds which result in partly versatile color combinations. Typical are the shell-like layers.
