Sodalith Blue

Petrography

Plutonic rock, stemming from melts with low silicic acid contents, which could not form quartz and no or only little feldspar, is called foyaite. Feldspar was substituted by the so-called foid-minerals (feldspar substitutes), like in this case, the deep blue sodalite. The blue color, from which this stone takes its name, is its rather typical characteristics. However, the color range ranges from white to yellow to red-brown in many different shades. The minerals sodalite and nepheline are chemically instable against acids and salts. This stone is not resistant against acid! Partial solution on the surface and crater forming may occur. Architects and clients have to be informed, especially, when it is a matter of usage in the kitchen or as a washstand in the bathroom. Possibly, rust forming may occur due to a high content of iron minerals.

Petrogenesis
