Petrography

The rock consists almost exclusively of calcium carbonate = calcite. The dark, highly variable, and decorative parts are also mostly made of calcite, but with very fine inclusions of graphite, possibly also other dark silicates. The areas that are usually only faintly yellow to brown in color contain traces of limonite iron oxides.

Petrogenesis

The origin of this metamorphic marble was calcium deposits at the bottom of an ancient sea, formed from the remains of calcifying organisms. The initially loose sediments solidified over time into limestone. Only during a later mountain uplift did such high pressures and temperatures act, resulting in a clearly visible crystalline structure here. In the process, the contours of former fossils were destroyed. However, the different composition of the originally flat layers was preserved, which were thoroughly kneaded through the mountain uplift.
